With the evolution of technology, the internet, and social media, people have a need to be plugged in to everything at all times and to always be in-the-know. This 24-hour connected culture gives companies a challenge and an opportunity, depending on if they let them work against them or use them to their advantage.
How is it a challenge?
Companies now have to always stay relevant; there’s no time to waste. Today’s fast-paced culture feeds into a short attention span, but somehow companies have to keep this attention at all times. This can be seen as a threat when doing a SWOT analysis (strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats) simply because not all company owners are technologically inclined or advanced.
How to turn this challenge into an opportunity?
If you’re not technologically inclined, take advantage of the easier ways to build web presence, such as social media (Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr) or easy-to-use sit builders (Easy WebContent.) Become professionals at those and use them to their greatest advantage.
If you are somewhat technologically inclined, make sure you’re using all of your resources to their fullest capacity. How do I keep my audience plugged-in?
1) Daily Updates! Keep your Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr, company website, etc updated at all times. It shows your audience that you care about them and you want to fully educate them on every aspect of your company. It also shows that you are current and going to stay that way, so they don’t have to worry about being out-of-date next week.
2) Make your updates informative. Don’t make posts about how you feel about last night’s playoff game, this does not inform your audience about your company and may not even be appealing to your audience.
3) Avoid controversial topics. Controversial topics to tend to bring a large audience, however, it may not always be the attention your company wants. Any publicity is good publicity, unless it detriments the name of your company.
4) Be entertaining. Don’t make all your posts sound too “official.” This can seem automated and boring, people want to see fun and inviting updates on advances in your company.
